Total Hip Car Transfer

BEFORE ENTERING CAR:

• When planning to sit in front passenger seat, recline back of passenger seat greater than 90 degrees.
• Move passenger seat back to the farthest point to provide maximal leg room.
• Adjust seat height to the highest point either electrically and/or use firm pillow

ENTERING CAR:

• Approach passenger side (front or back seat) with walker/crutches.
• Turn to position self so back of legs touch car seat/car frame.
• Extend surgical leg forward.
• Transfer hands from walker/crutches to stable parts of the car (door fram, dashboard, back of seat).

REMINDER BEFORE SITTING:

• Do not bend at waist greater than 90 degrees
• Keep knees 6" apart
• Do not turn knees/legs inward

POSITIONING SELF IN CAR:

• Tuck chin to chest and slowly lower self into car.
• When front seat is used, slide back as far as possible towards drivers seat in semi-reclining position.
• When back seat is used, with left surgical hip use passenger side, with right surgical hip, use drivers side.
• Slide across back of seat in semi-reclining position (Use strong leg for assistance with pushing back).
• Family member may need to assist in lifting surgival leg.
• Turn to face forward in front seat, or in back seat, maintain position across seat.
