If
your doctor does not feel you are a good canidate for a cementless femoral stem,
you will recieve a cemented stem. A cemented stem serves the same purpose as
a cementless stems, but is secured in place by the use of bone cement. The procedure
for a cemented femoral stem is a bit different than a cementless stem. The femor
is reamed through the use of an electric drill with a special "bit"
(called a reamer) inserted on the end. This clears away the bone in the femoral
canal. The femor is then "broached" by using special instruments that
create a honey-comb like surface on the inner walls of the femor.
