Total hip replacement surgery is performed to enhance the quality of life in the patient. Ailments causing the need for hip replacement surgery can be painful and bring normal everyday movement down to a minimum. Recovery does take time and patience.
Hospital stays following total hip replacement surgery on average last between 3 and 5 days. Following the hospital stay, rehabilitation is required to bring back mobility to the operated joint. It is a process that is gradual over time.
After about 3 months, a patient will find themselves able to do a moderate level of athletic activity, depending on individual doctor reccomendations.
Total joint implants are meant as a means to repair damaged parts of the joint. Although it would be ideal that they last forever, they usually last fifteen years or more. Of course, as in any type of replacement surgery, problems can occur causing the need for revision surgery in some cases.
A patient can expect to return to a more normal active life, keeping in mind that precautions and care must be taken in order to preserve their new hip components.
