Osteoporosis, a growing health concern worldwide, affects over 28 million Americans. It occurs when calcium within the bones starts to deplete without replenishing, causing bones to become brittle and weak. Low bone mass often leads to more frequent broken bone injuries that would not commonly occur in strong, healthy bones. These bone injuries are especially common in the hips, resulting in fractures, which require surgical fixation and in some cases total hip replacement surgery.
Although Osteoporosis is a disease commonly associated with post-menopausal females, it also affects several million men in the United States alone. Treatment with biphosphonate drugs to prevent the diseasse have recently come under scrutiny as to whether they improve the condition or may actually make bones more brittle and susceptible to fracture. Your physician can discuss the diagnosis and treatment based on individual needs.
