Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, one of the most common forms of arthritis in the United States affecting millions of people, causes disintegration of the cartilage that surrounds joints, causing stiffness and pain. Roughly half of all total hip replacement surgeries done every year are from osteoarthritis bone degeneration. Eventually, the loss of the cartilage leads to direct bone contact causing chips and loss of bone material. There are many reasons for osteoarthritis, age being among the top causes.

Although there are currently no cures to reverse the effects of osteoarthritis in the form of medication, certain precautions can be taken to help slow the degenerative process. Coping with pain is the first issue to address when confronted with osteoarthritis. Certain medications can help with pain control, and can prolong surgery for a good amount of time. Weight loss is also a key factor in dealing with osteoarthritis. This can help the longevity of the joint components, and will also help if surgery becomes necessary in the long run.
