Rather similar to Avascular Necrosis, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease results in the cut of the blood flow to the bone. This causes deformity and degeneration in the tip of the femur (or ball of the hip joint). Legg-Calve-Perthes is used more to decribe this process in children, typically ages 2-12.
Due to the fact that bone repair in children is more rapid than that of a grown adult, blood flow re-establishment often leads to the regeneration of healthy bone to the affected area. This in turn brings about a better long term outcome for children with Perthes as opposed to adults with a similar problem affecting their femoral head.
